In Distant Charity

At work, when you tell coworkers that you need to take a day off to attend a funeral, you will get a round of condolences from most of them. This is seen as a good gesture and then never spoken of again. When my great aunt passed away last weekend, I too did receive this gesture of good will and was grateful for it. I then proceeded to book a grievance day for the event. What happened next was heart warming.

Without my knowledge, my team lead/manager (I’m not sure which one) decided to send flowers to the funeral home on behalf of Research In Motion, the company. It was such a heart warming act that many of my family were surprised by it. In their eyes, corporations are cold and heartless, and mostly driven by profit at the cost of the people. Not this time, however. I thank them for this thoughtful gift.
